How Does Soda Affect Your Body?
I’ll admit… I drink a Dr. Pepper occasionally; usually when I’m feeling stressed. Are you a soda drinker? Have you felt effects from drinking them regularly? Personally, I haven’t noticed effects from drinking them, but soda is not a normal part of my diet.
Most people know soda isn’t the best choice, as the main ingredients are water and high fructose corn syrup. But most people don’t know how bad the ingredients actually are. And until I researched the ingredients, as well as the way those ingredients affect our bodies, I didn’t know how bad soda really was either.
Scroll to the bottom of this post to see an infographic I created to give you an easy reference of what these sugary beverages do to your body.
Each soda, as well as how large the can/bottle is, has different amounts of sugar. Pepsi and Coke contain about the same amounts.
Watch this video to physically see how much sugar a can of Coke actually has.
As of 2014, about 1 in 5 people drink a soda daily. Dana Angelo White, a registered dietitian stated in response to the survey, “I think most people still don’t realize just how much sugar is found in these sugar-sweetened beverages. I often do a demonstration and physically show people what 10 to 20 teaspoons of sugar looks like — it’s very powerful,” she said. “There’s also a disconnect on the downsides of all that sugar — so bad for teeth, blood sugar and waistlines — the extra calories really pile up quickly.”
Also, most soda that has caramel coloring contains the probable human carcinogen 4-methylimidazole (4-MEL). And despite petitions to the FDA for setting limits on the amount of 4-MEL, the FDA believes it’s completely safe for consumption, no matter how much is in the product.
Most soda containers contain BHA which is a “probable” carcinogen. Let me remind you, “probable” means it has been proven to cause tumors and cancer in animals. But there isn’t “sufficient” evidence it causes cancer and tumors in humans.
Soda really affects your body from your brain to your bones and everything in between.
